While beauty trends come and go, it's safe to say that we are never short of finding new ways to wear our makeup. And according to celebrity makeup artists, there are several on-the-rise trends you'll want to mimic in 2024. Ahead, MUAs Benjamin Puckey and Dahlia Warner share their expert insight on the biggest makeup trends we'll see in 2024. From soft brows to coquette cheeks, keep scrolling to learn more about all of the looks.
Meet the Expert
- Benjamin Puckey is a celebrity makeup artist whose clients include Emma Roberts, Priyanka Chopra, and Tracy Ellis Ross. He is also the Global Color Director for Clé de Peau Beauté.
- Dahlia Warner is a celebrity makeup artist and men's groomer working in Los Angeles and New York City.
Subtly Groomed Brows
Brows trends are ever-evolving. While the '90s and early 2000s had us leaning into skinny brows, Pluckey predicts individuals will gravitate toward the opposite in 2024. "I see a shift towards subtler, beautifully groomed brows," he notes. "Eyebrows will look soft and brushed into shape." In other words, natural-looking brows are in.
Ethereal Skin
Whether you prefer a dewy or matte foundation, our experts predict ethereal skin will be a goal across the board. "Expect to see lots of glowy, lit-from-within complexions that are beautifully luminous," Warner says.
Puckey agrees that luminosity will play a role in complexion trends, adding, "Matte skin is back but with a luminous twist." In that regard, if you want to add radiance to your complexion but prefer to wear mate foundations, apply an illuminating primer like Charlotte Tilbury's Wonderglow Face Primer ($55) first to get the best of both worlds.
Playful Eyes
It's all about the eyes next year. Pinterest Predicts' 2024 report highlighted "blue beauty" as a forthcoming trend, and Puckey specifically predicts we will see a resurgence of blue eyeshadow. To get in on the hype, Puckey recommends Cle de Peau Beauté's Eye Color Quad in Azure Blue Sea ($75).
Joining the conversation of playful eyes, Warner adds, "I expect to see graphic eyeliner looks with a matte pastel twist." These playful eye looks are a departure from the classic black-liner looks we've seen repeatedly on the red carpet.
Coquette Cheeks
"The coquette trend will continue in 2024 with flushed cheeks [being a key part of makeup looks," Puckey says. To achieve a natural blush effect, using tints like Benefit Cosmetics Benetint Liquid Lip Blush and Cheek Tint ($24) layered with cream blush formulas can make a lasting impact on your makeup look. Start by applying the liquid tint to the apples of your cheeks and follow up with a cream blush on top for added depth and saturation.
Romantic Matte Lips
Matte lipstick will be presented in new ways next year. "Matte lips are going to take a fresh turn in 2024 with brighter shades," Puckey says. Warner elaborates, noting, "We will see a lot of blurred matte lip trends in the upcoming year in romantic shades such as variations of pinks and reds."
To achieve the blurred matte lip trend Warner mentioned, you can softly apply matte lipstick to the inner part of your lips with a fluffy brush and slowly continue blending it in the center and outward of the lips in sheer layers. Don't have a brush? Your finger can be used as a tool to mimic the blurring effect by lightly tapping lipstick on your lips.
Natural Lashes
As a professional makeup artist myself, I predict more people will invest in the health and appearance of their natural lashes this year. This is primarily due to individuals' continued affinity for "no-makeup, makeup" looks. Instead of extensions and falsies, 2024 is shaping to be a year where more people will reach for conditioning primers and volumizing mascaras to help them achieve luscious lashes.
