Time traveling is something Rihanna’s hair knows all too well. You name an era, the Fenty Beauty mogul has most likely channeled its aesthetic through her hair, always pulling it off in the most fierce way possible. She’s channeled the 1920s with short, swirly hair, she’s done Y2K the right way with chic blunt bangs, she’s gone full '60s with a flippy malt shop bob, and has served up more contemporary hair inspo than we know what to do with. However, her latest delve into the '50s is now up there with our favorites.
On February 27, Riri teased a collaboration with A$AP Rocky on Fenty Beauty and Fenty Skin’s Instagram accounts. After getting a sneak peek at what they worked on, on February 28, it was finally revealed to be a short film starring the lovebirds centered around the brand’s ultra-viral Lux Balm.
The Born to Steal: Yours, Mine, Ours short film was a full display of classic film noir aesthetics down to the black and white filter, mid-century modern California mansion, and, of course, Rihanna’s look, which is what we are mostly obsessed with.
The whole look was retro It Girl to a T. However, her hair is what truly transported her into the '50s.
Sitting somewhere in between a bob and a lob, Ri’s hair grazed her shoulders, with some strands reaching down to her collarbone. Her entire head of hair was uniform with tight curls and cascading Marcel waves reminiscent of a classic film star.
Despite all that, what truly gave it a retro '50s vibe was the spiral curls in her baby hairs that accented her hairline and forehead—including two swooping curls framing her face, a large circle on the right side of her forehead, and a slightly smaller semi-circle near her hairline.
Rihanna’s outfit pulled everything together. Reminding us of the mob wife aesthetic immediately, she lounged in an opulent fur coat layered over silky white pajamas as she snacked on freshly made pancakes. Though also, central to the plot of the short film, she also stole Rocky’s blazer to step out for a moment, earning her the title “Blazer Bandit.”
