CeraVe's Moisturizing Cream Transformed My Dry Skin

Every now and then, you tumble upon a skincare product that's so good it feels almost criminal to gatekeep it. In a sea of thousands of moisturizers, finding the one can seem like an impossible task. However, after trying CeraVe Moisturizing Cream, I think I've finally found it.

This moisturizer is not only extremely hydrating, but it also feels effective on sensitive skin conditions. It's not too heavy or oily and doesn't sit on your skin. Plus, Dr. Henry says it's good for all skin types as ceramides are essential for overall skin health and don't typically cause reactions. "Ceramides aren't considered allergens because they strengthen the skin barrier—they're actually improving the skin's ability to resist chemicals and ingredients that might be considered irritants or allergens," she adds.

The Ingredients: Ceramides and More Ceramides

CeraVe was developed by dermatologists and uses a patented formulation that promises to provide a protective barrier on the skin's surface. According to the brand, this special formulation, called Multivesicular Emulsion Technology, ensures the moisturizer will be time-released throughout the day for complete hydration. CeraVe also uses ceramides, which help retain water in the skin. CeraVe products contain three different ceramides, which are meant to help not only protect the skin but also to keep it hydrated all day long. This is important because, as dermatologist, Mark Strom, MD, puts it: "A compromised skin barrier is deficient in ceramides, which can cause common concerns like dryness, irritation and cracked skin, as well as flare-ups of conditions like eczema. The three essential ceramides found in all CeraVe products (1, 3 and 6-II) are identical to those found in the skin, so they help restore the skin’s natural protective barrier by replenishing ceramides."

This cream is especially good for those with extremely dry skin, or skin that dries out halfway through the day. Dr. Strom, explains that this is because of a unique delivery system, called MVE technology, which slowly releases these hydrating ingredients over time for long-lasting moisture. The product may also work well for people undergoing chemotherapy and experiencing severely dry skin as a result.

How to Apply: The More, The Merrier

This particular product is an all-over body moisturizer; Dr. Strom says he recommends it for use on your face as well as the rest of your body. I know—many of you may shudder at the idea of putting the same cream on your face and body, but it's derm-approved and beloved practice by many loyal users.

In terms of how often you should apply it, Dr. Henry recommends once or twice daily. "Consistency is key. Use the cream daily, typically as a final step in your skincare routine at night. It can also be used in the morning, especially if you have dry skin," she says.

CeraVe Moisturizing Cream is one of those golden treasures in skincare that isn't exactly known by everyone. I had never heard of the product until an appointment with my dermatologist a few years ago. I was on medication for adult acne, and my skin was so dry.
