When it comes to men's haircuts, short and textured 'dos have a monopoly in the space. And while they may be a mainstay of every barbershop, it doesn't mean there's only one cut to fit the description. There are short styles for every personality, face shape, and hair type. Whether you prefer a sleek and polished look or lean toward a more rugged, textured vibe, the possibilities for self-expression are endless. Plus, it's the perfect option for improving the appearance of hair, whether it be a stepping stone to longer lengths or a staple for amping up fine or thinning hair. It's all about finding the right hairstyle and cut for you.
From tousled curls to low-maintenance buzz cuts, find 35 of our favorite short hairstyles for men below along with essential tips for styling straight from the experts.

Curly On Top
Keep your curls alive and well à la Miguel with clean, shaved sides and loose waves on top. This look can be styled to either make the curls defined or left loose and breezy.
Ruffled Bangs
Paul Mescal is known for his tousled style, and he wears it with confidence. His signature look is playful and perfectly imperfect.
Short Quiff
Timeless and elegant, Regé-Jean Page's short quiff has become his signature look for a reason. To achieve your own variation, ask your hairstylist for a squared yet natural shape and a higher fade.
Slicked-Back
For those with bob-length hair, slick it back like Tom Holland for a 007-esque look. Secure long-lasting results by styling the hair with either a pomade or lightweight gel.
Brushed-Back Taper
The brushed-back look isn't only for below-the-chin lengths. Henry Cavill's neat taper is still long enough to be styled up and away from the face.
Short Locs
Take a cue from the ever-cool Lenny Kravitz and loc your natural hair for a rockstar look. To keep hair nourished, apply a hair oil—like the MoroccanOil Treatment.
Twists
Sometimes a precursor to locs, twists are an excellent way to add definition to a shorter cut. Babs Olusanmokun pairs his signature twists with a full beard for the ultimate face-framing effect.
Brushed Forward
Bring more volume and density to the front of your face by styling your hair in a brushed forward style. Here, Troye Sivan styled his platinum hair forward but left strands loose and wavy to add texture and a more laid-back feel.
Buzz
As stylist, Patrick Butler notes, short hair is pretty much always in style. "Short hair is a popular option for men every summer as temperatures rise," he notes. A buzz—seen here on Joe Jonas—is fairly easy to DIY and, better yet, requires little-to-no daily maintenance. Many men actually "shaved or buzzed their hair themselves," Butler explains.
Flat Top
A flat top—in which the hair on top of the head is shaped so as to resemble a flat deck—is retro but still modern, and it's best for those who aren't afraid to wear their personality on their sleeve (or, as the case may be, on their head).
Keep in mind that this look requires a bit more maintenance, so it's ideal for those who are willing to put in the work, like basketball player Iman Shumpert, pictured here. "The key is finding what looks best on you and what type of maintenance you're willing to do to keep the look up to date," says Butler.
Quiff Haircut
This haircut should be tapered with clippers at the nape and on the sides. The top is left longer and with layers and texturing throughout.
Use a blow-dryer to achieve volume on top, pushing the hair toward the back with a brush. Either a boar bristle brush or a ball-tipped vented brush works best. Work a quarter-sized amount of mousse through damp hair. Using the brush, blow-dry the hair with upward movements, working away from your bangs. Once hair is dry, and ample volume has been achieved, add some medium-hold pomade through your hair.
Grown-Out Buzz
A buzz with a bit more length—á la actor Michael B. Jordan—offers style and ease. "If you want something short and sweet with barely any maintenance, then a buzz cut is a great option," says Butler, who explains that it has consistent length all over. "Product usage is minimal since there isn’t much to style."
Blended Texture
This fuller-on-top look is chic and sophisticated for those looking for something stylish but professional. "A short cut, with two inches in length on top—blended down to shorter sides and back—is a very easy and stylish haircut that can be worn in a variety of different ways," says hairstylist, Stephen Marinaro. "Think Brad Pitt in Fight Club or in his Oceans movie series. It’s cropped, textured on top and can be styled with a matte paste very easily."
Tapered Clipper Cut With Sideburns
Kumail Nanjiani's leading-man haircut works best on medium-textured hair with natural body. You'll need a tapered clipper cut at the nape and sideburns. The top is left long and layered, and blended into the sides.
Maintaining this cut does require some styling skill. Wash hair with a volumizing shampoo to start with a strong foundation. Dispense an egg-sized amount of volume-boosting mousse into your hands, and work it through damp hair. Part the hair where it naturally wants to split. Using a blow-dryer and brush (a Denman styling brush or a boar bristle paddle brush is best), work the hair up and slightly off to the side.
Byrdie Tip
Once the shape has been created, finish off with a quick-drying, medium-hold hairspray.
Curly Taper With Deep Side Part
Adrian Grenier is well known for his signature curls, but this particular look (one of his shortest lengths to date) is equally notable. The tapered cut emphasizes his natural texture, made even more pronounced with that retro side part.
Short Curls
Instead of working against naturally curly hair, have your stylist or barber cut your hair into a shape that works with your curl and the shape of your head. This style is tighter at the temples and nape while fuller on top and in the crown area. The right amount of layering makes the curls spring like a dream.
Humidity is your enemy when you have curly hair, so you want to contain the frizz to keep your curls nice and wavy. It's best to let your hair air-dry, or you can use a diffuser on the end of the blow-dryer. Finish with a grooming cream that's designed for curly hair.
Clean Fade
"If you want to add some style while keeping it short, ask your barber or stylist for a clean fade," notes Butler. Here, Idris Elba shows off a timeless, buzzed version of the cut in which the sides are faded and the top is just slightly longer.
Low Taper
Those who want a bit more coverage than what a clean fade offers might opt for a low taper, like Ryan Reynolds. "The choice here is based on how much skin you want to expose," notes Butler. "A low taper keeps you a bit more covered while a fade can expose more skin."
Pompadour
Nick Jonas's pompadour is perfect for the dapper gentleman who has plenty of products in his arsenal, as it does require a bit more styling time than some other looks on our list. "Products for short hair are a must," says Butler. "A medium-hold styling cream is one of your safest bets. Pick one with low shine and a medium hold (this Floyd's Molding Paste is my go-to) so it supports your stoke without looking too precious."
Pompadour With Fade
For even more style, combine the above pompadour with a classic fade, like singer Miguel. The look requires regular touch-ups (see your barber every three to four weeks to keep it trimmed) and a roster of quality pomades.
Crew Cut
The crew cut is classic and low-maintenance, but with a little effort, you can make it look stylish. Use a boar-bristle brush to distribute your hair's natural sheen, as this look can otherwise seem dry if you just wash and go. Take just a few moments to run a light-hold pomade through your hair to add shine. Done and done.
Byrdie Tip
In between haircuts, use a personal trimmer to square off sideburns and the nape. This saves you both time and money.
Overgrown Fro
The Weeknd made headlines when he chopped off his iconic locs in favor of a shorter, overgrown fro. Not only does the newer look embrace his natural texture, it has style in spades.
Casual Polish
Diego Luna's hair is slicked-back but not stuffy, thanks to the use of a styling cream that doesn't harden the hair. The key here is to only slightly run the fingers through the hair with the product—so it veers more approachable and not overly styled.
Short Fro
Drake's short Afro retains his signature clean, blunt edging but is easier to maintain, as it requires fewer trips to the stylist than his usual buzzed style.
Gentlemanly Brush-Out
It probably comes as no surprise that actor Henry Golding once worked as a hairstylist. His own style is the result of a scissor cut and likely requires the use of a blow-dryer and texture cream.
Modern Mullet
Here, Kanye West's slightly grown-out hair is shaped into a modern version of the mullet—marrying style with sophistication. This look does require a trim every few weeks, so either be prepared to visit the stylist frequently or try it for a while before growing it out.
Braids
For those who fear damage, braids are a protective style and an easy way to keep hair out of the face. While they are typically seen on longer-haired men, rapper A$AP Rocky demonstrates that they work on shorter hair, too.
Long Top With Buzzed Sides
The style seen here on Justin Bieber allows for the illusion of longer hair, without all the effort of actually growing it out all over the entire head. Instead, hair is grown out on the top of the head and simply brushed back, with hair kept shorter (or even completely buzzed) on the sides.
Tousled Top With Clipped Sides
This variation on the quiff involves a bit more styling, to add shine to the hair. Here, musician Zayn Malik has added a few loose, stray hairs around the head, for interest. Use an anti-frizz hair serum (like Kérastase Discipline Oleo Relax Anti-Frizz Oil Serum) to ensure hair stays shiny and healthy.
Tousled Waves
The final evolution of the aforementioned tousled look, is the longer iteration seen here on Charles Melton. While the top of spirited waves remains relatively the same, the sides, albeit still tapered, are much longer and show more of their natural texture.
Wet-Look Spikes
Chris Hemsworth’s textured spiky hairstyle gives off a laid-back, cool vibe that is perfect for the Australian star. Work a hair wax or pomade through the hair to achieve this tousled look. Create a few more pronounced spikes by putting a bit of hair product in your fingers and shaping smaller pieces into spikes. One great styling product for this is Tigi Bed Head Matte Separation Workable Wax.
Textured Fade With Blonde Tips
NFL star Odell Beckham Jr. never disappoints with his hairstyles—and this textured fade is no exception. Beckham gives his hair some edge with blonde tips, which provide a nice contrast to the faded sides and dark beard.
Spiky Top With Fade
David Beckham is another superstar athlete that always nails it with his hairstyles. This spiky top with short, faded sides gives him a look that is both clean, yet modern. The cut could also be styled into a faux hawk for an edgy look.
Defined Curls
Curly textures pair incredibly well with shorter lengths as the reduction of weight exalts their natural bounce. Anthony Ramos shows his off with a defined, wet-look style which is a great choice if you're susceptible to frizz.
Shag
Shags are often considered longer haircuts (à la Matthew McConaughey), but Ryan Gosling has been a longtime ambassador of its shorter version. What's essentially a longer crew cut gets a significantly cooler twist with its mussed-up texture and matte finish.
