The words "icon," "legend," and "mother" get tossed around a lot these days, but we truly got to see the definition of all three when Joni Mitchell took to the stage at the 2024 Grammys. Despite having nine Grammys under her belt (10 after last night), the prolific singer and songwriter made her debut Grammys performance at 80 years old with a moving rendition of "Both Sides Now."
For the occasion, Mitchell wore her signature braids, as well as a black velvet pant set accessorized with pearly nails and as much chunky jewelry as you would expect from a folk icon. While I was entranced by her performance last night, I couldn't help but notice that her skin looked especially glowy on stage. Luckily, makeup artist Molly Greenwald gave Byrdie exclusive details on how she created Mitchell's look for the evening.
"Joni’s iconic natural look, elevated, was the feel for Joni’s first-ever performance at the Grammys at 80," Greenwald tells Byrdie. "I wanted to create a classic, glowing, flushed face." She adds that Mitchell wanted to feel like herself when she stepped on stage.
Greenwald used a full face of Ilia for the look and prepped the singer's skin with the brand's new Base Face Milk, adding "lightweight layers of hydration to plump her delicate skin." She then added the Super Serum Skin Tint SPF 40 in ST2.5 Sombrio to her entire face, applying the product "as you would a serum" with her fingers. Greenwald then added the True Skin Serum Concealer in SC1.5 Suma under Mitchell's eyes. "I love to keep [the makeup] sheer in the right places in order to see the life through the skin," she says.
For the cheeks, Greenwald applied a mix of the Multi-Stick in In The City and the Liquid Light Serum Highlighter in Atomic to "add lots of glow and warmth to the complexion." Finally, Greenwald defined Mitchell's eyes with the Liquid Powder Chromatic Eye Tint in Hatch, a pretty moss-green shimmer, and a coat of the Limitless Lash Mascara.
The very last finishing touch before Mitchell hit the stage? "A little powder in the right places and some fresh juicy multi-stick and highlight serum on the cheek."
